ScienceBase

What are the size limitations for items added to ScienceBase?

File size limit -- The current file size limit for uploads and downloads in ScienceBase is 10 GB. Files larger than 1 GB should be uploaded using the Large File Uploader tool available in the “Item Actions” section at the bottom of a ScienceBase page.

Files used to generate web services -- ScienceBase can generate web services from certain geospatial file types if they are uploaded through the edit form (individual file size limit of 1-2GB). Files uploaded through the Large File Uploader tool will not generate services.

  • GeoTIFFs -- ScienceBase can process geotiffs with overviews (internal or external) up to 1GB. A geotiff without an overview must be less than 250MB. For files that exceed this size, please contact sciencebase@usgs.gov to coordinate alternate data submission options.
  • Shapefiles -- ScienceBase can process shapefiles up to 500MB. If you have larger shapefiles, please contact sciencebase@usgs.gov to coordinate alternate data submission options.
  • ESRI Service Definition (.sd) files -- Single file uploads through the edit form should not exceed 1-2GB. ScienceBase can process uploaded .sd files if the unzipped content does not exceed 4GB.
