This file contains points that describe locations of oil shale core holes, rotary holes, and surface sections in the state of Utah and is available as an ESRI shapefile, Google Earth KMZ file, and ASCII text file.Increasing energy demand, changing economics, new technology, and geopolitical issues have spurred renewed interest in other energy alternatives such as oil shale, heavy oil, and tar sands. The USGS Energy Resources Program has previously conducted extensive field and geologic research on these commodities and is initiating an effort to inventory and make these important legacy information assets accessible to the public, land managers, and other decision-makers. In addition, the Energy Program is scoping...

This legacy database lists occurrences of minerals identified in the Green River Formation in the Uinta and Piceance Basins, Utah and Colorado using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The database was compiled from data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). The database includes 1200 samples from 14 cores in the Uinta Basin and 9443 samples from 30 cores in the Piceance Basin; within that dataset over 40 mineral phases are represented between the two basins. Quartz, dolomite, and feldspars are the most common minerals. For nearly a century, these two agencies conducted extensive research on the oil shale deposits of the Eocene Green River Formation, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming....

ScienceBase brings together the best information it can find about USGS researchers and offices to show connections to publications, projects, and data. We are still working to improve this process and information is by no means complete. If you don't see everything you know is associated with you, a colleague, or your office, please be patient while we work to connect the dots. Feel free to contact sciencebase@usgs.gov.
