Description of Work Benthos (benthic invertebrate) and plankton (phytoplankton/zooplankton) communities in Wisconsin's four Lake Michigan Areas of Concern (AOCs; Menominee River, Lower Green Bay and Fox River, Sheboygan River, and Milwaukee Estuary) and six non-AOCs will be quantified. The inclusion of non-AOC sites will allow comparison of AOC sites to relatively-unimpacted or less-impacted control sites with natural physical and chemical characteristics that are as close as possible to that of the AOCs. The community data within and between the AOCs and non-AOCs will be analyzed. This project is a cooperative agreement between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and the US Geological Survey (USGS)....

Note: This data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Two types of passive samplers for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) analysis were deployed in the Clinton River Area of Concern in 2019: semipermeable membrane devices for water and in-stream sediment samplers. Samplers were deployed in July 2019 and retrieved in August 2019. Additionally, bank sediment samples for PCB analysis were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in August 2019 and catch basin bottom material samples for PCB analysis were collected by LimnoTech in November 2019 under contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These data are a part of a larger study and associated USGS report (https://doi.org/TBD).

In 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey sampled benthic algae and invertebrates, and fish to assess the condition of the aquatic communities and water quality in 14 wadable streams near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additional community sampling was also done at a subset of three sites in 2011 and 2012 to assess temporal variation. Selected environmental (physical and chemical) data in the streams were collected to evaluate potential relations to the biota and the ecological health of the streams. Physical and chemical data included land-use/land cover; streamflow from USGS gages (except at two creeks that were not gaged); stream habitat; microhabitat at invertebrate collection points (depth, velocity,...

Streambed sediment samples were collected in October 2016 from streams tributary to Wisconsin’s western Lake Michigan shoreline. Streams included two Areas of Concern (AOCs), two non-AOC comparisons, and two additional non-AOC study areas. Within the Milwaukee Estuary AOC, samples were collected from the Milwaukee River (three subsites), the Menomonee River (two subsites), the Kinnickinnic River (2 subsites), and the Milwaukee Harbor (one subsite). The Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers converge in the Milwaukee Harbor and then discharge to Lake Michigan. Within the Sheboygan River AOC, samples were collected at three subsites. Samples were also collected at two subsites in the Manitowoc River and two...

Data are for zooplankton communities sampled in 2016 at the Sheboygan River Area of Concern and two comparison sites, the Kewaunee River and the Manitowoc River, which have similar physical and chemical characteristics. Zooplankton were collected by using tows from depth to the surface with a 63 micrometer mesh plankton net. Physical and chemical data that were sampled concurrently (specific conductance, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen) in water by use of a multi-parameter water-quality sonde, and the results of field quality assurance quality control are also included.
