For the past six years, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has funded the USGS to study fish responses to restoration efforts and to construct a model relating stream habitat with fish population dynamics in the Methow River Basin, a tributary of the Columbia River. In the proposed study, we will use fish growth, distribution and movement (USGS data), foodweb data (Idaho State University), river flow (BOR data that we will expand) and water temperature data (from numerous agencies) to develop spatially-explicit bioenergetics models to assess effects of climate change on the viability of resident salmonid populations based on models being developed by USGS. The dynamic environmental history of the Arctic makes it a natural experiment for the effects of climate change. Dramatic fluctuations in climate during the Pleistocene led to large ice sheets covering large expanses of the Arctic during glacial maxima, while ice-free areas such as the Beringian refugium persisted at high latitudes over multiple glacial cycles. Beringia roughly extended from the Kolyma River in Far East Russia through Alaska to the Mackenzie River in northwestern Canada. TIn July and August of 2001 and August of 2002, field crews from the Beringian Coevolution Project (BCP) at Idaho State University (ISU) sampled the small mammal fauna at 14 base locations in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST) for a total of 242 persondays (over 9812 trap nights) of collecting effort.
