Rapid expansion of cropland threatens grassland ecosystems across western North America and broad-scaleplanning can be a catalyst motivating individuals and agencies to accelerate conservation. Sprague’s Pipit(Anthus spragueii) is an imperiled grassland songbird whose population has been declining rapidly in recent decades. Here, we present a strategic framework for conservation of pipits and their habitat in the northern GreatPlains. We modeled pipit distribution across its million-km2 breeding range in Canada and the U.S.We describefactors shaping distribution, delineate population cores and assess vulnerability to future grassland losses. Pipitsselected landscapes with a high proportion of continuous grassland...

All tools, scripts and data described in this document are stored in the bbs_fifty_stop_data_2013.gdb file geodatabase and can easily be shared. All tools were created using Python 2.6.5 and ArcMap 10.0 using relative paths to facilitate distribution. The BBS Tools ArcToolbox was created to facilitate stop-level analysis by converting raw BBS route-level data tables to stop-level data tables. In general, the raw BBS data table contains one row, per route, per year, for a species that has a minimum of one observation on that route**. Each route stop is represented by a unique field in the raw table. The Create BBS Stop Data Table Tool, located in the BBS Tools ArcToolbox, creates two object tables (i.e. non-spatial)...

This project will partially support a PhD student at South Dakota State University (SDSU) advised by a diverse partnership engaged in wetlands conservation in SD (e.g., USFWS, SDGFP, NRCS, PPJV, NGOs). It will use recent advancements in remote sensing technology and analytical frameworks to identify the location and type of drained wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of eastern South Dakota. There will be multiple practical uses of these data, with the following hierarchical objectives, which may be expanded as resources allow: 1) quantify, spatially delineate, and classify drained wetland basins in eastern South Dakota and compile them in a format useable by habitat delivery constituents (e.g., USFWS, USDA-NRCS,...
