This Collection of Coal Field Measured Sections consists of handwritten descriptions of rock unit sequences measured along roads, railroads, trails, and strip mine highwalls in the Tennessee coal fields. Most of the collection is composed of sections measured by Dr. Harold Wanless during his study of the southern Appalachian coal fields in the late 1930's. Most of the sections are unpublished, except for being included as columnar section illustrations in - Wanless, H.R., 1946, Pennsylvanian geology of a part of the southern Appalachian coal field: Geological Society of America Memoir, 13, 162 p. Other measured sections in this collection originate from published and unpublished sources.

The documents are all available in digital format as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. High resolution tagged image format (tif) files are available for the large plates. ScienceBase brings together the best information it can find about USGS researchers and offices to show connections to publications, projects, and data. We are still working to improve this process and information is by no means complete. If you don't see everything you know is associated with you, a colleague, or your office, please be patient while we work to connect the dots. Feel free to contact sciencebase@usgs.gov.
