Internationally, the institutions created to address forest management have ranged from hard laws, put in place by governments through legislation, to soft laws such as forest certification. Each of these approaches requires enforcement and evaluation through monitoring and information reporting. I examined how partial cutting influenced the use and selection of habitat by chestnut-backed chickadees (Poecile rufescens ). My objectives were: (1) to examine the variability of nest survival and identify the contributions of year, harvest treatment and habitat characteristics, and predator activity at 3 spatial scales, (2) to compare use and selection of nesting habitat in uncut, partial cut-mature, and partial cut-old sites at 3 spatial scales, and (3) to identify the influence of habitat structure or annual differences in food abundance and predation pressure on reproductive output. To test the response of the dry Kluane boreal forest ecosystem (Yukon, Canada) to increased rainfall as predicted from climate change scenarios I irrigated three 1.5 ha forest stands from 1995-1999, to double baseline summer rainfall levels. I tested if various biotic and abiotic components of this ecosystem would react to the reduction of the summer water deficit relative to three control stands.
