Collection of well logs from Massachusetts

Summary

The collection of 50,000 paper well logs, dating back to the 1960's, represents three generations of well schedules; the original version (1966) contained uncoded information about a well and a brief lithology and a hand-drawn location map, and data has been electronically recorded, excluding the lithology description; the next version (1977) became the GWSI data file, and was designed using codes with an accompanying explanation and only the coded lithology information has been stored electronically and not the lithologic descriptions; the third version (1987) is more user friendly than earlier versions. This collection of well logs (well schedules) that contain lithology information or lithology logs, is stored and maintained by [...]

Material Request Instructions

A person would visit the office or telephone the information officer (Linda Comeau), who would retrieve information by going through files, or through electronic retrieval. The majority of the calls they receive (98%) are related to septic tank construction and soil evaluation for perc testing; other requests are for ground water information in times of drought or flooding. There are also requests for information from universities, and the private sector in contesting soil evaluations.

usageTrendThe request for information and therefore usage of the collection is often dictated by the seasons and regulations; for instance, in springtime, people want information on the depth to the water table for septic system design. In addition, homeowners want information on the soils in order to perform perc testing. There are increasing requests from land developers for maps on surficial geology and bedrock, as well as ground water information.
