Collection of samples from Alaska (AVO)

Hand samples, thin sections, geochemical pulps and crushed splits of rock from the Alaska Volcano Observatory

Summary

This collection is composed of hand samples, thin sections, geochemical pulps and crushed splits of rock collected by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), a joint program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAFGI), and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS). It includes rocks from AVO field projects as well as samples collected by AVO-supported graduate students as part of our efforts to better understand eruptive processes and mitigate eruption hazards. It is estimated that there are about 30,000 samples in this collection. The Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys division of AVO has no direct mandate to maintain [...]

Material Request Instructions

Most of the collection is stored at the Geologic Materials Center facility in Anchorage, and users follow GMC procedures to request access. For the parts of the collection not at the GMC (AVO Fairbanks thin sections, AVO Anchorage tephra samples, or any sample that is still being analyzed by AVO researchers), users request access from an AVO member, who typically forwards that request to me and Cheryl Cameron at DGGS will work to obtain access for them.

Purpose

These samples are collected as part of AVO's efforts to better understand eruptive processes and mitigate eruption hazards.

Rights

Please find the access instructions on the Geologic Materials Center web page: https://dggs.alaska.gov/gmc/access-samples.html

collectionGrowthThis collection depends entirely on AVO’s continued geologic field projects – low budget years do not add many samples to the collection, while eruptions can add a large amount at one time
