Summary

The Nature Conservancy's Climate Wizard is a user-friendly viewer and data portal that provides access to Maurer et al.'s 2007 downscaled climate data and PRISM climate data. The images here are examples of the type of information that can be found on this website. The images were downloaded from the custom application of the website (climatewizardcustom.org), which allows users to upload a shapefile and concentrate on an area of interest (in this case, the footprint of the SRLCC). The PDF images do not contain detailed numerical data, so they are best used for visual approximation or to view broad trends. For more detailed information, please see the Climate Wizard website or the attached file "Precip_image_data_ASCII_format.zip". This file contains the numerical data associated with the PDF images in an ASCII format, which can be converted to raster layers in ArcMAP (directions are included below, after citations). There are also complete ArcMAP packages with data from the Climate Wizard in this item's parent folder.

The first attached PDF file, “annual precipitation_1961_1990.pdf”, shows mean annual precipitation during a period that represents current conditions. The other files show projected change from these conditions. Projections are for two future time periods: 2040-2069 and 2070-2099 (each projection PDF contains 2 images, one for each time period).

Files labeled “precip_departure” show projected change from current conditions in mm per year, and files labeled “precip_percent_departure” show projected percent change from current conditions.

There are projection PDFs for three different emissions scenarios: A2, A1B and B1. Emissions scenarios are possibilities for how the future will unfold in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, land use and other environmental factors. The A2 scenario predicts high emissions and rate of change, A1B predicts intermediate emissions and rate of change and B1 predicts low emissions and rate of change.

Note: there are 16 general circulation models (GCMs) in the Climate Wizard. All projections here are ensemble averages of the 16 GCMs (the 50% quantile rank, or median of the GCMs).

Here are directions on how to view ASCII text files in ArcMAP (these instructions are from the Climate Wizard's FAQ section, http://www.climatewizard.org/FAQ.html)
1. In ClimateWizard, display exactly the data you want to download, then click the Data option from ClimateWiz menu. Save the file with .asc extension (if you don’t have this option, save as .txt and then rename the file with the extension changed to .asc).

2. In ArcGIS, open ArcCatalog, then open ArcToolbox.

3. In ArcToolbox, go to Conversion Tools→To Raster→ASCII to Raster→Input ASCII Raster File. Navigate to your downloaded .asc file. Your Output Raster file should be renamed with 13 letters or less, leaving the extension blank (this will give you a GRID file, which is easiest to use for math). The Output Data Type must be set to FLOAT.

4. In the ArcToolbox, go to Data Management→Tools→Projections and Transformations→Define Projection. Select your new file for input.

5. Under Coordinate System, select Geographic Coordinate Systems→World→WGS 1984.prj.

6. The file is now ready to add to your ArcGIS project using the Add Data button.
