Summary

Album caption and index card: The cone of an extinct hot spring or geyser upon the east fork of the Yellowstone River. A very curious mammiform mound, of about 40 feet in height, built up by overlapping layers like the Cap of Liberty on Gardiners River. The material is principally calcareous. No water issues from the cone at the present time, and none of the springs in the immediate vicinity are above the ordinary temperature of brook water. [Yellowstone National Park] Wyoming. 1871.
