Album caption and index card: Box Elder Canyon affords a good section through the main ridge, being a much more regular gorge than the canyon of the La Prele. It is from 600 to 800 feet in depth, entirely of erosion, and so narrow that it is difficult to pass through it on foot, the side walls being perpendicular and sometimes overhanging. The predominating rocks are calcareous sandstones and some layers of quite fine limestones, with a great variety of texture. Converse County, Wyoming. 1870. Personal email communication from Alan Terrell on February 11, 2021, "On August 21, 1870 Jackson accompanied several others to Box Elder Canyon south of the North Platte River. Jackson took images jwh00271, jwh00272, jwh 00863 and jwh01491. Here is Jackson's supporting diary entry, '(22m) by road- about 40 by side trips. With Dr. Elliott, Turnbull, Ford, Gifford and Rapheal to long side-trip up Box Elder to where it comes thro" the hills in deep canyons. Remarkably fine. Securing the views...'
