Hills composed of Watauga shale, the hills rise to uniform height and their flat tops form parts of an elevated old valley floor in the Doe Valley, Iron Mountain in the distance, view northwestward from a point on the road 1 mile north of Doe Valley mine. Johnson County, Tennessee 1918. Plate 17-B in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 737. 1923.
