Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. February 1969 eruption of Kilauea Volcano. Makaopuhi Crater, showing a dark aa flow which erupted on February 22, 1969, covering 90 percent of the floor of the deep pit. The aa was fed by 230-meter high cascades, as part of a light-hued pahoehoe flow (lower right) spilled over the crater rim. The rest of the pahoehoe flow advanced down Chain of Craters Road (background), changing to aa. Note the fallen trees along the broad edge of the flow in the lower right. A prominent dark aa flow, center right, also erupted on February 22. March 1969. Figure 9, U.S. Geological Survey Professional paper 891.
