Purpose

The Sauk-Suiattle Tribe occupies a small reservation along the Sauk River in western Washington. Both the reservation land and traditional tribal resources, including fish, shellfish, game, and plants, are vulnerable to a changing climate. USGS biologist Andrea Woodward will provide the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe with tools to help them understand the current and potential effects of climate change on important resources. Tasks include conducting a scoping and information-sharing meeting with tribe members, facilitating a meeting of technical eTrueperts to discuss priority concerns identified by tribal members, developing a simulation model to describe the effects of climate on essential resources, and designing a user-friendly interface for tribal staff, students, and others. Users will be able to change parameters and conduct sensitivity analyses, and incorporate new information and conditions. The project goal is for the tribe to gain ownership in the process by setting priorities based on understanding climate change predictions and consequent changes to habitat.
