Summary

Landforms along the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic coastlines for the conterminous United States are attributed with the relative vulnerability of horizontal erosion due to sea-level rise to characterize coastal zone stability. The position and extent of landforms are geospatially indexed as line-events where these coastal zone features are intersected by the linear-referenced 2013 - 2014 U.S. Geological Survey National Hydrography Dataset Coastline, which corresponds to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2013 - 2014 mean high water level datum delineated in intertidal zones open to oceans, behind barrier coasts in bays, lagoons, and estuaries, and sometimes where tidal currents reach upstream (landward) [...]

Purpose

National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Coastline Geomorphology and Risk line-event feature classes are developed and used to characterize the extent and distribution of coastal landform features and the associated relative risk of horizontal erosion at Mean High Water levels (MHW) for the conterminous U.S. coastline. Created along the linear-referenced NHDCoastline using the Hydrographic Event Management (HEM) tool (http://nhd.usgs.gov/tools.html) in a geographic information system, the digital datasets attribute the Pacific, Gulf, and Atlantic coasts. Attribution of the linear-referenced NHDCoastline for conterminous U.S. states provides digital vector data identifying the occurrence and extent of landform types attributed with the relative risk of horizontal erosion. This geodata is used to generate risk line-events that quantify the percent and distribution of relative risk rankings as a guide for locating easily eroded to comparatively stable shorelines. The geodata provide a baseline source that characterizes landforms and stability in conterminous U.S. intertidal zones. The snapshot in time for mapped geodata can be used in analyses and modeling of temporal and spatial intertidal zone change studies used in environmental and ecological management and protection programs.
