Purpose

In this study, we quantified patterns of tree establishment in subalpine meadows located in two vegetation zones and a transition between them inthe Olympic Mountains. We used timing and spatial patterns of establishment and synoptic weather trends occurring in the 20th century to compare the response of vegetation zones to changes inclimate. Thus, we can compare the sensitivity of regeneration across a gradient of vegetation zones to the magnitude of change predicted by general circulation models. Understanding the relationship between regeneration and climate is important because it is not included in mechanistic models,in spite of being a fundamental process.
