The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper MidwestEnvironmental Sciences Center (UMESC) collectsphotography of the Upper Mississippi River System(UMRS) floodplain on a regular basis. These dataare used to support the Center's long-term goalsof understanding the UMRS and developing usefulproducts for the Long Term Resource MonitoringProgram (LTRMP). In 1999, 1:15,000-scale colorinfrared aerial photos were collected for LTRMPstudy areas. The 1999 photos of the WeaversBottoms area were scanned and georeferenced toprovide a reference image for a restorationproject.

The Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Centeradministers the Long Term Resource MonitoringProgram (LTRMP), authorized under the WaterResources Development Act of 1986 (Public Law99-662). The mission of the LTRMP is to providedecision makers with information to maintain theUpper Mississippi River System (UMRS) as a viablelarge river ecosystem given its multiple-usecharacter. The long-term goals of the Program areto understand the system, determine resourcetrends and impacts, develop managementalternatives, manage information, and developuseful products. The collection and distributionof high-resolution aerial photography aids theCenter in meeting these goals.
