States maintain some records concerning places where water is withdrawn (points of diversion) and also some information about the amount of water that is withdrawn over time. They may also track specific diversions within a water right by its designated beneficial use category. States' diversion data can be updated on an ad-hoc basis or it may be subject to reporting requirements and be reported/recorded on a more set timeframe. The time that the information is updated internally varies and is specific to each agency's mission. Most states maintain this information in a database format.
