State Wildlife Action Plans

Summary

State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs) are assessments of the wildlife and habitats in need of conservation action by each state. Congress mandated the states create SWAPs every ten years beginning in 2005 and are the way states receive funding from the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. Each SWAP contains a list of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) as determined by that state. USGS was asked by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) to integrate the SGCN lists into a national list to see a national picture of SGCNs. Purpose

This collection in ScienceBase provides the original source information on State SWAP and SGCN lists along with files and links to processing information used by the USGS in integrating the data into one complete form. The value-added process provided by the USGS examines the species names provided in State plans, aligning them wherever possible with the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) and/or the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to help identify species in common between multiple states that might be referred to with different names locally.
