The International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA) 2000 conference "The Role of Boreal Forests and Forestry in the Global Carbon Budget" was held on May 8-12, 2000, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and brought together nearly 300 experts, scientists, forest managers, and policy advisors from around the world. Manuscripts from the conference have been published in special issues of The Canadian Journal of Forest Research, Forest Ecology and Management and Climatic Change as well as in this proceedings volume. Collectively these papers represent a snapshot of the state of science at the end of the 20th century.
