Summary

Problem: The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) was established to accelerate ecosystem restoration in the Great Lakes by confronting the most serious treats to the region, such as nonpoint source pollution, toxic sediments, and invasive species. Much of the effort associated with GLRI is being placed near the most impacted areas in the Great Lakes Basin. Priority Watersheds have been targeted by the Regional Working Group’s Phosphorus Reduction Work Group. These Priority Watersheds (Fox/Green Bay, Saginaw, Genessee, and Maumee) are characterized by having a high density of agricultural land use and have ecosystem impairments that have been clearly identified. The outlet of each of the Priority Watersheds is being monitored [...]

typeShort Project Description
valueThe Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) was established to accelerate ecosystem restoration in the Great Lakes by confronting the most serious threats to the region, such as nonpoint source pollution, toxic sediments, and invasive species. The outlet of each of the Priority Watersheds is being monitored by the USGS for water quality, and nutrient and sediment loading to the Great Lakes.Within these Priority Watersheds, monitoring will be conducted at sub-watersheds (~HUC12), edge-of-field, and subsurface-tile scale. Relationships between the smaller to sub-watershed scale will help develop an understanding on how conservation efforts may impact the watershed as a whole.

productDescriptionAs built into this project we will begin writing publications in FY16 with a project fact sheet (and story map), holding time study, and begin evaluations/comparisons between our GCLAS load work and the regressions at the top of our teams list of publications to finalize. It is the goal to have the fact sheet and holding times study ready for publication and have a template for the comparison of load publication (GCLAS vs. Regressions) at the beginning of WY17. The next series of publications will revolve around the comparison of methods from our “super gage” work as well as BMP evaluation papers. After a period of 5 to 7 years additional SIRs will be produce based on loading models, trends, and additional SWAT modeling of the subsections watersheds.
