Summary

The authors floated the Yukon from Eagle to Holy Cross and the Tanana from Fairbanks to Fort Gibbon in the summer of 1914, documenting information about native villages along the way. As patronizing as the tone can be, the authors describe subsistence practices and note that "...the march of progress is apt to cause trouble for the natives unless prompt steps are taken to have their land rights respected." They describe village populations, including settlement patterns, missionary and educational efforts, and health and sanitary conditions. They acknowledge the use of poisens on trap lines by white men, and the readily apparent negative influences of alcohol.
