Dam Removal Study Results and Design Details

Publication Date

Wieferich, D.J., 2016, Dam Removal Study Results and Design Details: a constituent dataset of the National Dam Removal Science Database, U.S. Geological Survey Data Release, doi:10.5066/F7057D1D.

This dataset contains a set of properties detailing design parameters and the results of scientific studies conducted on dam removals. It is part of the distributed data architecture for the National Dam Removal Science Database. The properties provide information extracted from literature references, identified through the Citation URI reference in the dataset. The terms (properties) in the dataset come from the Dam Removal vocabulary, with field names in the first line of the CSV providing direct URI/URL references to the appropriate term. The dataset is provided in CSV format as a snapshot of what is ultimately a dynamic data stream coming from text mining and other synthesis operations. The dataset was originally derived from the [...]

The Dam Removal Study Results and Design Details dataset provides details about the scientific studies on the removal process for use in analyzing correlations and differences in dam removal projects and the scientific studies conducted on them. The Dam Removal Study Results and Design Details data also exist in a CartoDB instance (reference web link) that serves as the backing for the Dam Removal Information Portal.

The data you have secured from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) database identified as Dam Removal Study Results and Design Details have not received USGS approval and as such are provisional and subject to revision. The data are released on the condition that neither the USGS nor the U.S. Government shall be held liable for any damages resulting from its authorized or unauthorized use. The data in this dataset have been assembled by the USGS and are available in the public domain.

The data assembled in the CSV originally came from the "Study Results" and "Study Design Data" tables in the associated USGS Dam Removal Science Database (reference item associations in the ScienceBase item). That table went through a number of offline processing steps that will be formalized into code at a later time to produce a derivative that contained the featureuri reference to dam removals in the Spatial Feature Registry and the citationuri reference to published reports in the Research Reference Library as persistent identifiers used throughout the National Dam Removal Science Database. Final processing steps to produce the initial iteration of a usable standalone table were executed through OpenRefine and are captured in a JSON file attached with this ScienceBase item. Those steps changed column names to provide direct URL references to the ScienceBase Vocabulary where the Dam Removal terms are defined.
