Summary

This qualitative inquiry used the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline public hearings as a point of reference to determine how some Dene transmit their knowledge of the land in environmental hearings. This study, directed by a critical approach, includes a review of the literature addressing aboriginal knowledge and environmental impact assessment, in addition, nine Dene from the Deh Cho region of Denendeh (Northwest Territories) discussed their public speaking experience during the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry. Dene participants voiced their understanding of public conduct and knowledge sharing distinct from the western perspective.
