Powell Center Natural Capital Accounting working group

Summary
For FY17, the USGS Powell Center has funded a new working group on natural capital accounting whose goals align substantially with the SECI project. Notably, this will extend SECI’s work by aligning ecosystem services and their values with conventional economic measures (i.e., Gross Domestic Product, GDP) to more clearly quantify linkages between the environment and economy. This group also has a proposal currently in review with the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) that, if funded, will extend its work through FY19. The group’s primary goals include: 1) synthesizing existing natural capital accounting data to quantify environmental-economic trends over time, 2) running national scale models of ecosystem services [...]
The group’s primary goals include: 1) synthesizing existing natural capital accounting data to quantify environmental-economic trends over time, 2) running national scale models of ecosystem services using a cloud-based modeling system and linked to national spatial datasets and models developed by USGS and others, and 3) applying natural capital accounting at the subnational scale (i.e., one of the SECI pilot sites) managed by multiple Federal agencies and for which economic data to value ecosystem services are available and policy applications relevant. The project will extend the value of the SECI effort by linking to work at the U.S. Department of Commerce and other agencies and within the private sector on how publicly generated science can inform more sound decision making in the public and private sector.
More information about the Powell group is available here: https://powellcenter.usgs.gov/view-project/57741607e4b07657d1a9910c. FY17 Objectives
Hold two working group meetings at the USGS Powell Center;
Begin work to build an architecture for national and subnational natural capital accounts.
FY17 Expected Deliverables
Develop medium and long-term road maps to generating natural capital accounts in the United States;
Develop a strategy for cross-agency collaboration and identify and deliver useful end-user products related to natural capital accounts;
In collaboration with the SECI project, develop and begin a scientific effort to map, model, and value ecosystem services at regional and national scales.
