Summary

This dataset is the result of measurements of groundwater levels in the Equus Beds aquifer near Wichita, Kansas, in January 2016. Potentiometric surfaces are interpolated for the shallow and deep parts of the aquifer, and rasters of the potentiometric surfaces are included in this data release. Wells were classified as being screened in the shallow or deep parts of the aquifer based on station name (some wells have a layer identifier in the station name) or, if no indication of aquifer layer was given in the station name, based on the depth of the well; wells with depths less than 80 feet below land surface were classified as shallow and wells with depths of 80 feet or deeper were classified as deep. Contours with a 5 foot interval [...]

Purpose

Point data were obtained in order to interpolate a potentiometric surface in the deep part of the Equus Beds aquifer near Wichita, Kansas. The potentiometric surface raster was contoured on a 5-foot interval for the purpose of mapping the surface. The potentiometric surface is used for monitoring changes in the volume of water stored in the aquifer. The Equus Beds aquifer is an important source of water for the municipal supply of Wichita, Kansas, the largest city in the State. The U.S. Geological Survey and the City of Wichita have maintained a long-term partnership through the cooperative program to evaluate and publish water-level maps. The water-level maps can be used to estimate storage-volume change in this important resource. For more information on other data related to this long-term project, see the "Equus Beds" webpage at the USGS Kansas Water Science Center website (http://ks.water.usgs.gov/).
