Summary

This collection of conservation areas consists of the floodplain of the combined streams of the Iowa River and the Cedar River. The study area begins just southeast of Wapello, IA, and continues southeast until the Horseshoe Bend Division, Port Louisa NWR. The area is currently managed to maintain meadow or grassland habitat which requires intensive management due to vegetative succession. In addition, this floodplain area contains a high proportion of managed lands and private lands in the Wetland Reserve Program and is a high priority area for cooperative conservation actions. Purpose

The USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin provides a genus-level geospatial dataset of vegetation for the approximately 1,234-hectares of Iowa River Floodplain consisting of conservation lands adjacent to the Horseshoe Bend Division of the Port Louisa NWR in Louisa County, southeast Iowa. Data are provided in the GIS shapefile format and based on color infrared (CIR) aerial imagery collected on September 2, 2014 at 3"/pixel using a minimum mapping unit guideline of 0.1 hectares.
