It was established as a county in 1822. The highest elevation in the county, 1,320 feet, is along a ridge on the Morgan County line. The lowest elevation, 515 feet, is where the Big Sandy River leaves the county. The 2006 population of 16,269 was 4.5 percent greater than that of 2000.
