Hazard, the county seat, did not officially receive its name (after Oliver Hazard Perry) until 1854. The 2006 county population of 29,836 was 1.5 percent greater than that of 2000. The highest elevation, 2,520 feet, is about 1.5 miles southwest of Tilford near the Letcher County line.
