Summary

The Suitable Habitat boundary identifies areas inside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem where habitat is deemed suitable for supporting a viable and self-sustaining Yellowstone grizzly bear population into the foreseeable future. The boundary was established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and formalized in the 2007 Final Rule to remove the Yellowstone grizzly bear from federal protection as a Threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (72 FR 14866 – currently vacated).

Purpose

The Suitable Grizzly Bear habitat boundary was first published by the USFWS as part of the 2005 Proposed Rule to remove the Yellowstone grizzly bear from federal protection under the Endangered Species Act (70 FR 69854 – currently vacated). The boundary was established as evidence that there was sufficient biologically suitable habitat to ensure continued long-term reproduction and survival of the Yellowstone grizzly bear. Suitable grizzly bear habitat was defined as areas satisfying three characteristics: (1) being of adequate habitat quality and quantity to support and sustain grizzly bear reproduction and survival; (2) areas that are contiguous with the current distribution of Yellowstone grizzly bears such that natural re-colonization is possible; and (3) having low mortality risk as indicated through reasonable levels of human/grizzly bear conflicts.
