Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) Program Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element has overseen the collection, processing, and serving of bathymetric data since 1989. A systemic data collection for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) was completed in 2010. Water depth in aquatic systems is important for describing the physical characteristics of a river. Bathymetric maps are used for conducting spatial inventories of the aquatic habitat and detecting bed and elevation changes due to sedimentation. Purpose

A bathymetry footprint, or shapefile of the LTRM pools (pending sufficient existing data) is extremely useful for scientists currently using bathymetry in their research. The bathymetric footprint would be relevant for both scientists that are conducting research pool-wide, and for those that don’t need the entire bathymetric coverage, but rather collection date information corresponding with specific areas of interest within a pool. The UMRS is a highly dynamic system, and knowing the different dates of collection over a multi-year period can be crucial information when using bathymetric coverages representing pool-wide conditions. Bathymetric data is an essential tool scientists use to monitor the ecology of the river, and to assess the possible impact of hydrodynamic changes upon the riverine ecology. The footprint will enhance bathymetric and topobathy products – as this will be a small downloadable shapefile that will quickly display dates of bathymetry collection for the user.
