Summary

In the North Central U.S., the rate and extent of changing climate conditions has been increasing in recent decades. These changes include shifting precipitation patterns, warming temperatures, and more frequent extreme events, such as droughts and floods. As these changes occur, managers face different challenges and have different needs, depending on the resources they manage. For example, water managers are focused on responding to changes in water availability, while wildlife managers may be more concerned with changing habitat conditions – whether it be for migratory waterfowl, coldwater fish, or large mammals. Purpose

The current rate and extent of climate changes across the region has been increasing over recent decades. These changes are being experienced in different ways across different management sectors. For instance; water managers need to respond to changing hydrological flows, early snowmelt, rain on snow events, more intensive rainfall events, as well as droughts. Whereas, wildlife managers will need different strategies depending on the nature of the species of concern which may vary from migratory water fowl, alpine amphibians, cold water fish, insects, or large mammals. These managers need to deal with direct climate effects on the specific target species, as well as important indirect effects associated with disturbance events, impacts on natural resource assets (e.g., forage availability, pest or disease exposures, habitat quality at the right season, or water availability), and species interactions. The scientific community alone cannot develop actionable science results for these management entities. The process of generating usable research findings for adaptation efforts to climate change is an emerging need so that appropriate management strategies can be implemented to deal with climate changes. The process of generating research efforts which can be used by resource managers occur through various processes of interactions between the research and the management communities. The process ranges from one where a researcher or a manager independently generates a solution, to where co-development of a research to action is co-designed in partnership with managers and researchers. Our research effort under FY17 funding will attempt to assess and evaluate the various process employed by the NCCSC over the past 6 years and to assess these efforts relative the delivery of usable research to the management communities we have worked with. The goal of the effort is to identify the set of processes best suited to develop actionable research findings that are useful to the management community. This project team is part of the North Central Climate Science Center’s Foundational Science Area Team, which supports foundational research and advice, guidance, and technical assistance to other NC CSC projects as they address climate science challenges that are important for land managers and ecologists in the region.

valueOur FY 2017 workplan on adaptation and engagement efforts has an overall goal to maximize the engagement process to facilitate continued interaction and collaboration among the research and management communities in our region to enable delivery of usable science and lead to effective adaptation strategies. We have three main objectives: a) Sustain the process of engagement between researchers and practitioners in our region; b) Conduct an evaluation of actionable science outputs of the Center and how useful and useable products are for our stakeholders and decision makers; and c) Integrate a social-ecological perspective into the ecodrought effort in our region, incorporating efforts related to ongoing Drought Risk and Adaptation in the Interior (DRAI) efforts to address sectoral drought responses in our region. This effort builds on the NCCSC adaptation working group activities and seeks to further enhance delivery of NCCSC resources for adaptation planning leading to actionable research in our region. Our effort build on existing projects and climate change adaptation studies in our region and will use these projects to assess and evaluate the generation of usable science to resource managers to develop adaptation responses to climate change. Outcomes of this effort will be: 1) Design of an engagement process to maintain a dialogue to support climate responsive decision making and usable science for climate change response actions 2) Formation of social-ecological system platform to enable analysis and evaluation of effective decision making to manage for ecodrought conditions 3) Social-ecological system input into the updated research and engagement strategy based on the ReVAMP science plan (ReVAMP II)
