Summary

The GIS shapefile and summary table provide irrigated agricultural land-use for Glades County, Florida through a cooperative project between the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Office of Agricultural Water Policy. Information provided in the shapefile includes the location of irrigated land field-verified between November 2016 and September 2017, crop type, irrigation system type, and primary water source used in Glades County, Florida. A map image of the shapefile is provided in the attachment.

Purpose

The data release provides a detailed digital field-verified map of irrigated land use within Glades County, Florida and a table summarizing the results for the 2017 growing season (November 2016 through September 2017). The land-use map and acreage table produced for this study will be compared to the Florida Statewide Agricultural Irrigation Demand (FSAID) Irrigated Lands Geodatabase (IGL), version 4 (The Balmoral Group, 2017) totals for Glades County, in an effort to help validate the irrigated crop acreages estimated in 2015 and to provide a better basis for the next set of estimates in 2020. Field-verified data on crop type, irrigated lands, and acreage summaries provide FDACS a more accurate basis for estimating current and future water demands. Details on the procedures and methodologies used for mapping and field verification in Glades County are the same as those used for Polk County, Florida, and can be found in Marella and others (2017).
