Summary

Despite the lack of surface flows, the Colorado River riparian corridor in Mexico has proven to be ecologically resilient. Floods in the 1980s and 90s in the region brought back large swaths of native riparian habitat, which still persist today in some areas along the river. Because the historic floodplain is extremely important for agricultural production and therefore the local economy, habitat maintenance must be integrated with continued utilization of lands and water for this purpose.The riparian, marsh, and open-water areas found in Reach 4 provide critical habitat for both migratory and resident riparian bird species. Material Request Instructions

Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative(Distributor)

Purpose

1. Utilize data and models developed through the binational agreement Minute 319 to predict the effects of climate change, alternate agricultural management practices, and environmental flows on a critical riparian habitat area in the Colorado River delta riparian corridor. 2. Provide water managers with the scientific information needed to assess the ability of Colorado River Delta environmental flows to manage riparian habitat, springs, and aquatic habitat to increase ecosystem resilience. Decision support tools will help managers in both the US and Mexico determine and quantify environmental benefits of irrigation on surrounding riparian and aquatic areas. The project will also help managers determine the benefits of additional environmental flows to critical riparian habitat areas.
