Summary

The purpose of this Traditional Knowledge (TK) research is to document important habitat characteristics of the selected focal fish and wildlife species based on the observations of traditional land users. The information may be used to develop habitat models to show where these specific fish and wildlife habitats occur across the Yukon North Slope. The Traditional Knowledge may also be used to validate other types of habitat mapping or to identify specialized habitats such as movement corridors, denning areas, wintering areas.

Purpose

This Traditional Knowledge Research Design and Data Collection Manual was prepared to achieve two goals. The first is to document the purpose, objectives and overall methods of the research. Secondly, this document provides detailed guidance in the implementation of the methods through the Data Collection Manual section. This Data Collection Manual closely follows the Data Collection Manual developed for the recent Traditional Land Use Study undertaken for WMAC(NS) and the Aklavik HTC by Peter Armitage and associates. Throughout the development of the research, we have also extensively used the recently completed ‘Conduct of Traditional Knowledge Research, A Guidebook written by Peter Armitage and Stephen Kilburn in 2015 for the the WMAC(NS) to guide research in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.
