Summary

Sediment hosted gold deposits in Nevada were first mined in the 1960s from open pit mines with large tonnage and low grade resources. Since that time, continuing exploration and discovery have identified extraordinary resources, and together these deposits now form the second-largest gold endowment on Earth, surpassed only by the Witwatersrand Gold Fields of South Africa. The data herein are part of a larger U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) project to develop an updated geospatial database of mines, mineral deposits and mineral regions in the United States. Purpose

The point, polygon, and tabular data in the database provide locations and information on mining activity and known mineral occurrences in the Carlin area of Nevada, USA. The data are suitable for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or other database and geospatial software. The data may be used to develop maps, perform geospatial analyses, or to evaluate mineral resource potential in the areas covered by the data. The information is intended to meet the needs of a wide community of users that includes the geoscience and mineral exploration communities as well as State and Federal agencies, private industry, and the general public.
