Summary

The GIS shapefile and summary table provide irrigated agricultural land-use for Hardee County, Florida through a cooperative project between the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Office of Agricultural Water Policy. Information provided in the shapefile includes the location of irrigated land field-verified between November 2017 and September 2018, crop type, irrigation system type, and primary water source used in Hardee County, Florida. A map in pdf format is provided to illustrate shapefile information for the county.

Purpose

The data release provides a detailed digital field-verified shapefile of irrigated agricultural land-use within Hardee County, Florida and a table summarizing the results for the 2018 growing season (November 2017 through September 2018). The land-use shapefile and acreage table produced for this study will be compared to the Florida Statewide Agricultural Irrigation Demand (FSAID) Irrigated Lands Geodatabase (IGL), version V (The Balmoral Group, 2017) totals for Hardee County, in an effort to help validate the irrigated crop acreages estimated in 2015 and to provide a better basis for the next set of estimates in 2020. Field-verified data on crop type, irrigated lands, and acreage summaries provide FDACS a more accurate basis for estimating current and future water demands. Details on the procedures and methodologies used for mapping and field verification in Hardee County are the same as those used for Polk County, Florida, and can be found in Marella and others (2017).
