PAD-US 2.0 Reconciliation Script Used in Data Processing
Summary
The PAD-US 2.0 Reconciliation Script is a python script used in data processing to transfer select attributes (GAP Status Code, IUCN Category, Public Access, Date of Establishment) between PAD-US updates. These attributes are generally unavailable in agency source data submitted for PAD-US updates, but have previously been locally assigned or reviewed. The script does not transfer categorically assigned measures; these are applied to each update following a crosswalk from Designation Type (and size in some cases) described in PAD-US Standard Tables and attributed as “GAP - Default” in associated reference fields. The PAD-US geodatabase tracks the methods used to assign measures in the GAP Status Code Source, IUCN Category Source and Public Access Source fields. The script identifies where records are NOT attributed as “GAP - Default” in these fields for transfer to the next PAD-US update. Records where Date of Establishment is NOT null are also selected for transfer. As a reliable system of persistent identifiers is not currently available, the script joins Unit Name, Designation Type, Manager Name, and polygon centroids to transfer information between PAD-US updates. This is a fairly reliable system; however, it fails when boundaries or names change drastically. The script flags instances when transfers fail for PAD-US Team review and manual transfer, as resources allow. Categorical assignments of measures are applied to all records without locally assigned attributes following transfers. The script is also used to assess overall changes between PAD-US updates (new or missing areas) during review.
The PAD-US 2.0 Reconciliation Script is used in data processing to transfer select attributes (GAP Status Code, IUCN Category, Public Access, Date of Establishment) between PAD-US updates. These attributes are generally unavailable in agency source data submitted for PAD-US updates, but have previously been locally assigned or reviewed. These data are used to support biodiversity protection, multiple use management, and public access assessments or trend analyses (limited by available data). The script also compares existing data in PAD-US to new data inputs and highlights new records, missing records, or records that have not changed.
