Summary

This digital elevation model provides a tool for calibrating tsunami risk to observations of the 1945 Makran tsunami in Karachi Harbour. The DEM bathymetry is derived from soundings made mainly during the first eight years after the tsunami. Although deficient in portraying intertidal backwaters and upland topography, the DEM accurately depicts the sheltered setting of one of the two tide gauges that recorded the 1945 tsunami.

Purpose

Simulations of historical tsunamis can be improved by using archival bathymetry, shorelines, and topography in digital elevation models (DEMs). DEMs are commonly developed to support tsunami modeling. This DEM was prepared for use in simulating the 1945 Makran tsunami in Karachi Harbour. Nautical charts and topographic maps from the middle of the 20th century allow the DEM to approximate physiography that the 1945 tsunami encountered. The intended application is computer simulation of the tsunami’s effects. Those observed effects -- compiled from a tide-gauge record, newspaper accounts, and testimony of elderly residents -- are the subject of the draft UNESCO folio that is cited above in this metadata.
