Summary

The Interior Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, and Utah) is home to a vast and diverse geography consisting of deep canyons, great expanses of desert, mountain ranges, and forests, as well as diverse human communities. The majority of the land in these states is held by state, federal and tribal entities; and environmental changes pose challenges to the management of these public and tribal lands across the region. Assessing and addressing the information needs of federal, state, and tribal resource managers is a critical part of helping these decision-makers manage risk and adapt to these changes. Identification and evaluation of existing barriers and opportunities for knowledge exchange between scientists and managers within the region [...]

Purpose

Environmental change in the Interior Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, Utah) poses challenges to management of public and tribal lands across the region. The SW CASC will partner with the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions (CCASS) at the University of Arizona to organize a working group of scientists and resource managers that will design and implement a regional adaptation and assessment network. We will launch this work group immediately following a Fall 2018 gathering of adaptation professionals from throughout the Southwest, where we will conduct a preliminary assessment of the state of the knowledge and practice. Thereafter, the working group will evaluate existing regional capacity and integrate experience from elsewhere in the US to develop guidance documents on leadership and capacity building, training, and conducting scientific assessments. In addition, the group will design network support mechanisms to improve access to core information and decision support needs of natural resources managers.
