Summary

This Fish Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the fish communities sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), fish were sampled for identification and measurement of length and weight. Identification of fish were done by the same biologists for both the 1998-2000 data and the 1986-87 historical data (Smith et al. 1994). Any fish difficult to identify were preserved in buffered formalin for later identification. If large numbers of a particular species were collected the first thirty fish were measured and weighed; remaining fish were individually measured and group weighed. All fish were returned [...]

Purpose

Fish communities were sampled, in comparison to 1986-87 historical data, to determine any changes in the fish community structure, including relative fish abundance and diversity, and changes in biomarkers for selected fish species. The data collected as part of the LEEI evaluations have been used to ascertain whether remedial activities and contaminant reductions had been successful for AOCs on Lake Erie. In future work, the techniques established in the LEEI reevaluation can be used to monitor trends in the Lake Erie ecosystem over the long term. The LEEI dataset can serve as a foundational data source, when used in comparison to future data collections, for analyzing the long-term success or not of contaminant reductions and impacts.
