Summary

This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. Purpose

The purpose of this dataset is to provide historical groundwater withdrawals for the Coastal Lowlands aquifer system. The Coastal Lowlands aquifer system consists of several hydrogeologic units that are the sources of groundwater-withdrawals including the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers, the Burkeville confining unit, and the Jasper and Catahoula aquifers. The data were distributed to the six hydrogeologic units termed layers, listed above, along with the overlying Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. The data have been discretized into 6 layers corresponding to different hydrogeologic units including the overlying Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. In many groundwater-modeling applications, the discretized data are referred to as ilays (Niswonger and others, 2011); hence, in this data release the data are structured by using the “ilay” terminology. All groundwater-withdrawal data then were aggregated by category, by date (month and year) to a 1-kilometer by 1-kilometer grid using the row ("irow") and column ("icol") terminology (Niswonger and others, 2011).
