Summary

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the North Carolina Turnpike Authority, conducted a study to establish baseline water-quality conditions and bed-sediment chemistry in Currituck Sound, North Carolina, prior to construction of the Mid-Currituck Bridge. This Data Release contains the associated data described in the Open-File Report, “Characterization of Water-Quality and Bed-Sediment Conditions in Currituck Sound, North Carolina, Prior to the Mid-Currituck Bridge Construction, 2011-18”. These datasets contain information on analytical constituents measured in samples, surface-water environmental and quality-assurance sample results, bed-sediment environmental and quality-assurance sample results, phytoplankton taxonomy [...]

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to establish baseline water-quality conditions and bed-sediment chemistry prior to the planned construction of the Mid-Currituck Bridge in Currituck Sound, North Carolina. Results for bed-sediment environmental samples collected during November 2011 to August 2017 at five monitoring sites were used to characterize bed-sediment chemistry in the vicinity of the planned alignment of the Mid-Currituck Bridge. Results for the quality-assurance and quality-control samples (including duplicate samples, replicate samples, and matrix spike samples) were used to assess potential bias and variability in data that may result during the collection, processing, and laboratory analysis of environmental samples. Datasets are provided separately for the bed-sediment environmental samples and bed-sediment QA samples.
