Iran, Varzeqan: 2005-2019

The Varzeqan cluster is named for a small village in East Azerbaijan Province, northwestern Iran, about 100 km southeast of Tabriz. It is based on a Mw 5.9 earthquake on November 7, 2019 and its aftershocks. A dozen earlier events were added to improve resolution. Reza Ghods read records from the permanent Iranian network stations. The relocation analysis strongly prefers focal depths near 10 km, or perhaps a little shallower, for all events, but teleseismic depth phases for the November 7 mainshock suggest a depth closer to 20 km, as do the broadband waveforms (Harley Benz, personal communication).
