Summary

PROBLEM Alley Creek, a tributary to Little Neck Bay (Queens County, New York; figure 1) has been designated as impaired by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) for primary and secondary contact and included on the 303(d) Impaired Waterways for pathogens related to combined sewer overflow contributions. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) and New York City Parks & Recreation have developed a long-term control plan (2014) and a watershed management plan (2015), respectively, to improve water quality and ecosystem health. Point and non-point sources of pathogens are implicated, including stormwater and combined-sewer outfalls, groundwater seepage, and diverted surface waters. [...]

productDescriptionFollowing review and approval by USGS and NYC DEP staff, all physical, chemical, and USGS microbiological data generated during this study will be disseminated via the National Water Information System: Web Interface (NWIS Web) site at http://waterdata.usgs.gov. Microbiological data generated by the NYC DEP lab and ancillary data compiled will be presented via a USGS Data Release in support of a USGS online-only interpretive report, which will be produced to provide results of the sampling, context of the results relative to the larger NYS DEC study and Urban Waters Federal Partnership studies throughout Long Island and NYC, respectively. Information necessary for NYC DEP and community stakeholders to make informed decisions about sources of bacterial contamination and future track-down efforts will be provided. A USGS ScienceBase project page will provide links to relevant data, spatial data of the study area for download, and to the report.
