Summary

The 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kilauea Volcano began in the late afternoon of 3 May, with fissure 1 opening and erupting lava onto Mohala Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision, part of the lower Puna District of the Island of Hawai'i. For the first week of the eruption, relatively viscous lava flowed only within a kilometer (0.6 miles) of the fissures within Leilani Estates, before activity shifted downrift (east-northeast) and out of the subdivision during mid-May. Around 18 May, activity along the lower East Rift Zone intensified, and fluid lava erupting at higher effusion rates from the downrift fissures reached the ocean within two days. Near the end of May, this more vigorous activity shifted back uprift into Leilani [...]

Purpose

This geospatial database provides a digital representation of map data relating to the 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Hawai'i; specifically, these geospatial data are versions - updated for accuracy - of those used to construct semi-daily lava-flow maps during the eruption, and they have been incorporated into maps for the U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper chapter that is preliminarily titled "Chronological narrative for the 2018 eruption of Kilauea" by Parcheta, C.E. and others (in preparation). Feature data are also included for sample sites in the U.S. Geological Survey data release "Whole-rock and glass chemistry of lava samples collected during the 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kilauea" by Lee, R.L. and others (2019, accessed at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9LVY7GV). This report supersedes the "Preliminary map of the 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Island of Hawai'i" by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory staff (2018, accessed at https://doi.org/10.5066/P994OGY8). The content and character of the digital publication, as well as methods for obtaining the digital files, are described here. See Entity_and_Attribute_Information for positional accuracy of features and attribute data.
