The Conservation Efforts Database (CED) is in the process of collecting information related to conservation efforts implemented in the sagebrush biome. This data will predominantly covers the time from 2009-2018. It is our hope to utilize this information and partner with USGS to investigate if/how these efforts are related to greater sage-grouse population trends being developed as part of a larger Population Monitoring Framework that FWS is involved with. Results of this evaluation would help inform which populations/areas may be receiving a larger conservation benefit from action implemented as well as if changes in trends are related to conservation efforts or other environmental factors. This effort is in support of the Regional Priority to ensure self-sustaining populations of sage-dependent birds and other sagebrush associated species. Key partners include FWS, USGS. Beneficiaries also include BLM, NRCS, FWS-PFW, WAFWA, the 11 Sage-grouse States Wildlife Agencies (CADFW, CPW, IDFG, MTFWP, MTDNRC, NDOW, NDFG, ODFW, OWEB, SDGFP, UDWR, WADFW, WYGF) and Agencies and Organizations delivering conservation on the ground or involved in planning and design of conservation delivery.
FY2021The purpose of this project is to leverage an existing sage-grouse hierarchical population modeling framework to evaluate implemented conservation actions aimed at improving habitat conditions or reducing environmental stressors on population performance within the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment.
Model output will assist USFWS and other federal and state resource management agencies to better understand the overall effectiveness of conservation actions carried out back-in-time and their relative importance on population recovery. Models will also be used to predict future actions needed to reverse long-term declines and stabilize populations. Coupled with Targeted Annual Warning System, management agencies will be able to identify where and when populations are declining and implement the most effective treatments to improve restoration effectiveness. This $30,000 SA investment supports conservation priorities for the Sagebrush Ecosystem. This funding is to supplement the 100-k invested in FY2019
