Material Request Instructions

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Inland Bathymetric and Topobathymetric Survey Inventory (Inventory) is a compilation of survey records developed to provide survey and product parameters, or attributes that include the surveyed water feature name, publication citation, data vintage, USGS mission, online linkage, collection method (that may include supporting data used to create a seamless elevation product extending across the land-water interface), resolution (data collection and/or product), projection, datum(s), and vertical and/or horizontal accuracy for collection system, data point, or products if known. Survey data footprints for U.S. Geological Survey water feature datasets available for the conterminous U.S. and Puerto Rico and can be accessed using map services or by downloading the open format shapefile. Footprints are created through downloading available survey datasets and copying polygonal shapefiles depicting the extent of the survey, or converting text, tiff, and other shapefile formats to create polygon shapefiles to provide survey footprints depicting the location and extent of surveys. A survey for a water feature extending across two USGS Regions is included in both regions. . Some surveys provide a topobathymetric elevation surface extending across a land-water interface by merging bathymetric survey data with 3D Elevation Program lidar digital elevation model (DEM) data or other land-surface elevation data.

Purpose

Collection and integration of digital geospatial bathymetric and topobathymetric data are critical to building the 3D National Terrain Model supporting the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration goal for a 3D Nation to improve and enable critical applications. These uses include but are not limited to flood forecasting, hydrographic flow network analyses and modeling systems, water resource management, water quality analyses, land management and environmental health evaluations, geomorphology, channel condition, and sedimentation rate characterization, physiographic changes and impact analyses, wildlife habitat or ecosystems monitoring and protection, and models to account for water from the atmosphere to the oceans, and other science and engineering applications.
