Summary

This geodatabase reflects the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) ongoing commitment to its mission of understanding the nature and distribution of global mineral commodity supply chains by updating and publishing the georeferenced locations of mineral commodity production and processing facilities, mineral exploration and development sites, and mineral commodity exporting ports in Africa. The geodatabase and geospatial data layers serve to create a new geographic information product in the form of a geospatial portable document format (PDF) map. Purpose

The primary goal of this project was to compile a range of geospatial data layers that can be used in analysis of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries and the related economic and physical infrastructure of Africa, which are integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the region and the transportation of mineral products across domestic and global markets.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides these geographic data "as is." Unless otherwise stated, all data, metadata and related materials are considered to satisfy the quality standards relative to the purpose for which the data were collected. Although these data and associated metadata have been processed successfully on USGS computer systems, reviewed for accuracy and completeness, and approved for release by the USGS, no warranty expressed or implied is made regarding the display or utility of the data on any other system or for general or scientific purposes, nor shall the act of distribution constitute any such warranty. The burden for determining fitness for use of these data lies entirely with the user. Users are advised to read the dataset's metadata thoroughly to understand appropriate use and data limitations.
